Child Support

When two people have children together and subsequently separate, child support is likely to follow. The purpose of child support is to make sure that both parents contribute to the wellbeing of the child (at least financially).

Michigan law provides a formula for determining the amount of child support a party will be ordered to pay. The formula uses information such as, the amount of money each parent makes, the number of overnights the children spend with each parent, and child care expenses to determine the amount.

Although the formula the legislature has created to determine child support is not very flexible, the appropriate amount of earnings to attribute to each parent can often be complex. It is vital to an accurate calculation of child support that both parties income be represented correctly. To avoid overpaying child support, or, to avoid being underpaid child support, you should talk to an experienced child support attorney. Child support is often times modifiable and changing circumstances will often necessitate that parties recalculate child support during the lifetime of the child support obligation.
